6 Signs Your Insurer Isn’t Taking Significant Water Damage Seriously

When water damage becomes mould sooner than you expected…

Water damage claims are often treated as simple, cosmetic issues. In reality, water intrusion can affect structural elements, insulation, electrical systems, and indoor air quality. When water damage is not properly investigated or addressed early, the long-term consequences can be far more serious and costly.

If your insurer is downplaying water damage, these are some of the most common warning signs.

1. No make-safe completed

If your insurer has not arranged urgent make-safe works, drying, or moisture control, water damage may be allowed to worsen, or any make-safe works that were authorised seem too simple or short.  Delays at this early stage often lead to secondary damage that becomes harder to separate from the original event.

2. Restorer not involved

Water damage assessments handled only by a builder or general assessor can miss contamination risks, moisture migration, and drying requirements. Without input from a qualified water damage restorer, underlying issues may go undetected.

3. Patch and paint recommended

When the scope of works focuses on patching surfaces and repainting without proper strip-out, drying, or investigation behind walls, floors, and ceilings, the damage is being treated as cosmetic rather than structural or systemic.

4. Mould risks ignored

If mould concerns are not investigated or are dismissed without proper assessment, the insurer may be overlooking health risks and building integrity issues. Mould growth is a common consequence of unresolved moisture.

5. Cash settlement forced

Offering a cash settlement before thorough investigations are complete can leave the true extent of water damage unquantified. This often shifts the risk of unknown or hidden damage onto the claimant.

6. No accommodation offered

If your home is affected by moisture, mould risk, or loss of essential services and no temporary accommodation is offered, the impact of the damage on habitability may not be properly recognised.

Final thoughts

Water damage is rarely just a surface issue. When early assessments are rushed or superficial, long-term problems can be missed. If several of these signs are present, it is often an indication that the claim is being managed as a minor repair, rather than a significant water damage event with broader implications.
